Frequently Asked QuestionsSummer 2008 Camper Information
Is Camp Winnegator a safe place for my kids?
Safety of children and staff is our first concern at Camp Winnegator. It is very important to follow the rules, especially around horses and water. No campers are allowed near the lake or horse except during scheduled time periods under the supervision of counselors.
What do kids need to wear around horses?
For any activities involving horses, campers must wear long pants and sturdy, enclosed shoes with at least ½ inch heels. Tennis shoes, heavy soled hiking boots, sandals and open backed shoes may not be worn in areas where horses are present.
If campers do not meet these safety requirements, they will not be permitted to ride horses at Camp Winnegator.
What do kids eat for lunch?
Campers should bring a bag lunch and snacks each day. Please label all lunch bags, drinks and other food. We will supply a refrigerator, but non-perishable food is recommended. Water and kool-aid type drinks will be provided. Machine soda will be available for purchase during lunchtime and breaks or you may send drinks with your child.
What do we do when we arrive at camp?
All campers need to be signed in and out each day. Sign in starts any time after 8:15, and sign out is at 5p.m. This will occur at the staff house which is located right off of Highway 151 on Winnebago Heights.
How should campers dress for camp?
Campers should dress according to the weather conditions and activities anticipated each day. Hats are encouraged. It may be best to send a small backpack with swimming attire, towel, shorts, long pants and appropriate footwear. Please label all equipment and apparel.
For swimming, aqua sport/water shoes are required for all lakefront activities.
Please apply sunscreen and bug repellant before the child leaves home in the morning and pack extra for later in the day.
What should not be brought to camp?
Campers are not permitted to bring cell phones, pagers, and electronic video toys and games to camp.
What if my child gets hurt at camp?
For everyone's safety there is a registered nurse or paramedic in attendance at all times. In the event of an emergency, we will attempt to contact parent/guardians first. If we cannot reach them, we will try the alternate contact you provided.
What if my child has special needs?
Please make us aware of your child's special needs. An attempt will be made to accommodate such needs. Advising us of emotional and/or physical disabilities and limitations will assist us in providing the most positive experience for your child.
How are the kids divided into groups at camp?
Campers will be divided into smaller groups based on age. Each group will have a full time adult counselor. The size of each group will not exceed 20. The ratio of staff to campers in the horse program will not exceed 1:5. Adult counselors may be assisted occasionally by high school age CITs (counselors in training).
We will make every attempt to group your child with their friends. Please let us know with whom you want your child to be grouped with ahead of time. Early enrollment is advisable to ensure your request will be possible.
Can parents and siblings visit camp?
Parents and siblings are invited to join their campers on Fridays at 5:00. Parents may join their camper in the arena for the carnival and take a tour of the camp. The carnival will run from 4:45 till 6:00. Campers and parents may then go to the rec. building for dinner. We will begin serving dinner at 5:45. All activities will end at approximately 7 p.m.
Dinner reservations must be made the week before your child's camp.
What is the payment and refund policy?
Full payment and paperwork for each session is due one week before the first day of camp.
Campers unable to attend camp due to illness or injury may be eligible for a prorated refund. There will be no refunds due to inclement weather. There will be no refunds in the event that inappropriate behavior results in a camper being sent home. One written warning will be given prior to expulsion.
